Women's Lax Builds 8-1 First-Half Lead and Finishes With 14-7 Victory at Endicott

Box Score
Katie Lotz led the defense with two caused turnovers

BEVERLY - The #12 ranked Tufts women's lacrossed team raced out to an 8-1 halftime lead en route to a 14-7 victory over the Endicott College Gulls on Wednesday afternoon at Endicott Stadium.

Tufts (5-3) used a balanced scoring attack that included six different goal-scorers including four tallies from senior midfielder Emily Pillemer (Arlington, MA) and three goals each from senior Lara Kozin (Suffern, NY) and sophomore Gabby Horner (Sudbury, MA).  The Jumbos out-shot the Gulls 35-16 in the game.

Jumbo goalie Tess Shapanka (Sudbury, MA) earned her fifth victory over the season by making four saves between the pipes and allowing just four goals before giving way to Rachel Gallimore (Hanover, NH).  Endicott's Leah Neff (South Berwick, ME), under heavy fire throughout the game, made 11 saves in net but took the loss.

Endicott (6-3) regrouped at the half and over the final 30 minutes played even with Jumbos 6-6, due in large part two goals apiece by midfielder Callie Murphy (Woburn, MA) and attackers Morgan DeShaw (Danville, NH) and Kelly Tierney (South Hadley, MA).  Murphy accounted for Endicott's only goal of the first half as she recorded her second straight game with at least three goals and her third overall of the season.

Tufts scored 3:18 into the first half, as senior Kelly Hyland (Acton, MA) found sophomore Kate Applegate (Chadd Fords, PA) for the game's first goal.  The goal started a 6-0 run for the Jumbos to start the game before Murphy used a free-position shot attempt to put the Blue and Green on the board with 6:12 remaining.  During the opening stretch, Kozin dished out two of her game-high four assists as the senior would finish with seven points on the day.

Tufts would score the final two goals of the half, one by Horner and the other by first-year midfielder Lindsey Walker (Suffern, NY) on a free-position shot to take the 8-1 halftime advantage.

After three straight by the Jumbos to start the second half capped off by Horner's third of the game at the 23:20 mark, Endicott picked up their play and outscored the visitors 6-3 by the end of regulation.

Murphy and DeShaw went back-to-back with unassisted goals at 23:20 and 21:57, then after a goal by Tufts' Kerry Eaton (Norfolk, MA), Murphy got her hat trick at the 18:19 mark of the second half.  After two straight goals by the Jumbos, Endicott scored the final two goals of the game, both by Tierney, to wrap up the scoring.

Tufts held slim advantages in draw controls (13-10), groundballs (22-20) and caused turnovers (9-7).  Endicott's Rachel Campos (Shrewsbury, MA) snatched a game-high five draw controls while Gulls junior Stacia Geno (White River Junction, VT) and Jumbo senior Katie Lotz (Montclair, NJ) tied for the lead in caused turnovers with two.
