WELLESLEY - The Tufts women's tennis team will play in the Nor'Easter Bowl final on Sunday after earning a 7-2 victory over host Wellesley College in the semi-final round on Saturday. The Jumbos will play NESCAC's Amherst College in the championship match on Sunday at 11 am.
The #12 nationally ranked Jumbos took care of #18 Wellesley rather handily. Tufts swept the doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX) and first-year partner Sophie Schonfeld (Washington, DC) won a 7-4 tie-breaker to take the first match. Junior captain Lindsay Katz (Baltimore, MD) and sophomore Eliza Flynn (Hamilton, MA) were 8-3 winners in second doubles.
In singles, sophomore Samantha Gann (Massapequa, NY) and junior Janice Lam (San Francisco, CA) were quick winners for Tufts in the fourth and sixth matches, respectively. After losing the first set 6-4, Bowman rallied for 6-3 and 6-4 finals to win #2. Flynn added a straight-set win at #3 as Tufts took four of six overall.
Wellesley picked up points at one and five. Marie Watanabe was a 6-2, 7-5 winner over Katz in the first flight, while Sojung Lee topped Rebecca Kimmel (Longmeadow, MA), 6-3, 6-2, at five.
The three-day Nor'Easter Bowl features six of the top 30 teams in the country in Division III tennis. Amherst is the #1 seed in the tournament and Tufts is second.
