WILLIAMSTOWN – Williams beat Tufts 5-0 to secure an NCAA Quarterfinal spot on Sunday in a regional final.
First-year Rebecca Curran (Rumford, RI) defeated junior Janice Lam (San Francisco, CA) 6-0, 6-4 to give the Ephs' their fifth and final point.
In this third-round NCAA match, the teams were vying for an NCAA Quarterfinal spot. Both had received first-round byes and won second-round matches on Saturday. The win over the Jumbos gives the Ephs' their fifth NCAA Quarterfinal appearance under Head Coach Alison Swain. They will play in Cary, North Carolina later this week.
The Ephs jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play. Kristin Alotta (West Islip, NY) and partner Kathleen Elkins (Davidson, NC) beat Samantha Gann (Massapequa, NY) and Lam 8-1. Caroline Capute (Baltimore, MD) and Curran defeated Sophie Schonfeld (Washington, DC) and Rebecca Kimmel (Longmeadow, MA) 8-3. The third doubles match was the closest of the day. Kara Shoemaker (Princeton, NJ) and Taylor French (Hidden Hills, CA) won the final match 8-6 over Lindsay Katz (Baltimore, MD) and Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX).
Elkins carried the Ephs' momentum into singles play. She beat Bowman 6-0, 6-0 to finish first and give the Ephs' their fourth point. Curran's 6-0, 6-4 win over Lam at the No. 6 spot ensured the Ephs' victory and the resulting spot at Quarterfinals.
Tufts finished its year with a 9-11 record against a very competitive schedule.
