MEDFORD – The Tufts women's tennis team won the lower three singles matches in straight sets to claim a 5-4 victory over neighboring rival MIT in their season-opener Thursday afternoon at Voute Courts.
With the match tied at 2-2, senior Lauren Hollender (Newton, MA), sophomore Sophie Schonfeld (Washington, DC), and senior co-captain Janice Lam (San Francisco, CA) won their matches to give the Jumbos a 5-2 advantage and clinch the match.
The Jumbos had taken two of the three doubles matches. The #1 pair of senior co-captain Lindsay Katz (Baltimore, MD) and junior Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX) were first off the court with an 8-3 win. MIT tied the match at 1-1 with an 8-6 victory at #2 by Victoria Tam and Candace Wu. Hollender and Lam gave Tufts an edge heading into singles with a 9-7 #3 doubles win.
MIT's Lauren Quisenberry took the #1 match convincingly at 6-2, 6-2 to tie the team score at 2-2. However, Hollender, Schonfeld, and Lam were next off the court in consecutive order. MIT closerd the final margin to 5-4 with victories in the second and third singles matches.
Tufts (1-0) will next host Brandeis on Saturday at 10 am. Hosting the ITA Regional Championships September 28-30 is up next for MIT (2-1).
