CAMBRIDGE - Despite a few close matches and a win in the number three singles spot, the Tufts Women's Tennis team lost to a dual match to local rival MIT, 8-1. First year Conner Calabro (Sherman Oaks, CA) easily won her match in the number three singles spot against MIT's Krystal Lai, 6-1, 6-1.
The tough play started in the number one singles match with senior Samantha Gann (Massapequa, NY) winning the first set against MIT's Elysa Kohrs before eventually falling, 4-6, 6-0, 7-6(2). The number five singles bout was just as close with freshman Chlesea Hayashi (San Anselmo, CA) battling Vynnie Kong but losing, 6-7(4), 6-4, 10-6. Fellow classmate Jacqueline Baum (Highland park, IL) also went three sets with the Engineer's Wendi Kong at number four singles, eventually losing, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Freshman Alexa Meltzer (New York, NY) was topped by Victoria Tam at number two singles, 6-1, 6-3. Sophomore Catherine Worley (New Orleans, LA) lost to Julia Hsu in the number six singles, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles play Gann and classmate Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX) challenged Lauren Quisenberry and Hsu in the number one singles slot dropping an 8-3 decision. The Jumbo's Calabro teamed up with junior Sophie Schonfeld (Washington, DC) at number two singles but were bested by the Engineers' Tam and Kohrs, 7-4. For Tufts in number three singles Worley and Meltzer took on Michelle Dutt and Lai, losing 8-3.
The Jumbos will be back in action on Friday, October 11 as they travel to Brandeis for a 3:00 pm match.
