ATLANTA - The 16th ranked Tufts women's tennis team resumed its 2012-13 season with a 9-0 loss at #4 Emory on Tuesday afternoon at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.
The win, Emory's third-straight, raised the team's season ledger to 6-2, including a perfect 4-0 mark at home. Meanwhile, the loss was the first of the season for Tufts, which dropped to 2-1.
Despite losing each match, Tufts played well in the doubles contests. The #1 pair of senior Lindsay Katz (Baltimore, MD) and junior Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX) lost 8-5 to junior Gabrielle Clark and first-year Annette Sullivan. At #2, Emory senior Jordan Wylie and first-year Madison Gordon edged Tufts junior Samantha Gann (Massapequa, NY) and sophomore Sophie Schonfeld (Washington, DC). First year Emma Taylor and junor Brenna Kelly won 8-3 in the third doubles match for the hosts.
The Eagles were dominant in singles, winning all six matches including five in straight sets. Senior Lauren Hollender (Newton, MA) was the only Jumbo to extend her match to three sets. She won her first set at #5 against Stephanie Loutsenko 6-3 before falling 6-4 in the second and then dropping an 11-9 tie-breaker in the third.
Gabrielle Clark, the #1 ranked player in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Atlantic South region entering the 2012-13 season, defeated Katz in the #1 singles match 6-3 and 6-3.
Emory will continue its stretch of games against nationally-ranked Division III opponents on Friday, when the Eagles host second-ranked Amherst College at the Woodruff P.E. Center at 2:00 pm, as part of the Fab 7 Tournament. Tufts is also part of that talented field and will play Washington and Lee at Emory on at 10 am.
