ATLANTA - Playing in the Fab 7 Tournament hosted by Emory University, #16 Tufts was edged 5-4 by #15 Washington and Lee University in women's tennis action on Friday.
The Generals came out of doubles with a 2-1 lead. The only Jumbo victory was in the third match, where the senior combo of Janice Lam (San Francisco, CA) and Lauren Hollender (Newton, MA) won by an 8-5 score. The top two doubles matches went to Washington & Lee by 8-4 scores, including #1 winners Sonja Meighan and Patricia Kirkland.
The teams split the singles matches, with the Generals taking the top three and the Jumbos winning the bottom three. Sonja Meighan and Meghan Buell lost a total of just four games in their #1 and #2 matches for W&L.
Hollender cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win against Claire Cahill in #5 singles. Sophomore Sophie Schonfeld (Washington, DC) had a 6-0 second set win while taking the #4 match for Tufts. Lam joined Hollender as winners in doubles and singles with a 6-3, 7-5 #6 final.
Tufts is scheduled to play Washington (MO) tomorrow at 2 pm. Washington and Lee and Sewanee are scheduled to play tonorrow at 9 am. The weather in Atlanta is not cooperating and the start times of these matches could be changed if play is moved indoors.
