Tufts Men's Tennis Loses Well-played NESCAC Match Against Bates College, 6-3

Ben Barad was part of a #1 doubles win for Tufts

MEDFORD - The #21 Bates College men's tennis team won two out of three in doubles and then took four of the six singles matches to earn a 6-3 victory at Tufts in NESCAC action at Voute Courts on Saturday.

The Bobcats came out of doubles with the 2-1 lead. They won the #2 match handily, as Timmy Berg and Pierre Planche took an 8-1 final. The Tufts #1 pair of freshman Nick Telkedzhiev (Plovdiv, Bulgaria) and senior co-captain Mark Westerfield (Menlo Park, CA) evened the score at 1-1 with an 8-5 win. Bates grabbed the lead with an 8-4 final at #3 courtesy of Henry Lee and Ben Bogard.

Singles was tightly contested as three matches went to three sets. Bates went up 3-1 as Planche won the #4 match easily. Jumbo freshman Rob Jacobson (Winnetka, IL) pulled the hosts to 3-2 by winning a first-set tie-breaker 7-6 (6) and then taking the second set 6-2 to win at #6. However, the next three matches off the court were all Bates winners as they secured the victory.

At #1, Bates senior Rob Crampton (Wilton, CT) needed three sets to defeat Telkedzhiev. That match clinched the team win. Lee defeated Tufts junior Austin Blau (Roslyn, NY) in three at #5 before Jumbo senior Ben Barad (San Rafael, CA) won in three sets, including two tie-breakers, at #2.

The Jumbos host Division I Villanova next Friday at 4 pm. Bates plays at Amherst next Saturday.
