WILLIAMSTOWN - The third-ranked Williams College women's tennis team picked up another conference win on Saturday, this time taking down #20 Tufts, 9-0.
Williams (12-3, 3-1 NESCAC) came out hot in doubles play to secure a 3-0 lead. The number one team of Rebecca Curran and Kara Shoemaker and the number three pair of Nancy Worley and Veronika Li each took their matches 8-1. Maria Pylypiv and Kathleen Elkins won their proset 8-3 at number two against Jumbos Samantha Gann (Massapequa, NY) and Lindsay Katz (Baltimore, MD).
Williams won all six singles matches in straight sets, but had to survive a couple of tie-breaks to do so. In the #1 match, Shoemaker won a first set tie-break 7-6 (2) over Katz. Shoemaker turned up the pressure and took the second set 6-1. Curran at #3 also won the first set in a tie-break 7-6 (6) against Tufts junior Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX). Curran had to fight hard again, earning a 6-4 win in the second set.
The rest of the Ephs played strong tennis, with nobody dropping more than three games in a set.
Williams hits the road for two matches to be played at Hamilton College tomorrow. The Ephs will face Rochester at 2 pm and then the host Continentals at 5 pm. The Jumbos, who fell to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in the conference, return home to play #1 in the nation Amherst on Monday at 4 pm.
