Wesleyan University Men's Tennis Earns Dramatic 5-4 NESCAC Victory Over Tufts

Freshman Nick Telkedzhiev won 6-3, 6-1 in first singles

MIDDLETOWN, CT - Wesleyan's Zach Brint outlasted Tufts junior Austin Blau (Roslyn, NY) in three sets to take the #5 singles match and give the host Cardinals a dramatic 5-4 win in a marathon NESCAC men's tennis match on Sunday.

With their match tied 1-1 and darkness approaching, Brint and Blau moved inside to play the final set to determine the outcome of the match. Brint broke to go up 4-2, then held to get to 5-2.  Blau held for 5-3 before Brint held for 6-3, giving Wesleyan the win.

Tufts had battled back from down 2-1 after doubles. They got a dominating #1 singles win from freshman Nick Telkedzhiev (Plovdiv, Bulgaria) and a convincing 6-4, 6-4 #2 victory from senior Ben Barad (San Rafael, CA). At sixth singles, freshman Rob Jacobson (Winnetka, IL) won the third set 6-3 for Tufts.

Wesleyan singles wins came at #3 where Sam Rudovsky took a first-set tie-break as part of his 2-0 win. Jeff Legunn had a strong 6-2, 6-2 victory on the fourth singles court.

Tufts' three doubles pairings were playing their second match of the day after the team won 7-2 at Connecticut College earlier on Sunday. Barad and Jacobson won at #1 at Wesleyan, 9-8. However, the Cardinals took the other two including 8-4 by Stephen Monk and Donovan Suh at third doubles.

The Jumbos dropped to 7-4 overall and 1-3 in NESCAC with the loss. Wesleyan improved to 5-8 and 3-2.

Tufts faces Trinity in conference action at home on Tuesday starting at 4 pm. The Cardinals next host Colby on Saturday at 9:30 am.
