MEDFORD - The Amherst College women's tennis team, ranked #1 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, extended their current winning streak to 10 matches with a fifth-straight 9-0 victory over the #20 Tufts women's tennis team in a NESCAC match on Monday.
As the Lord Jeffs won all three doubles matches, the most competitive was at #3. Lord Jeffs' Caroline Richman and Safaa Aly outlasted Tufts senior co-captain Janice Lam (San Francisco, CA) and sophomore Sophie Schonfeld (Washington, DC) 8-6.
In singles, Amherst lost just eight games in the first three matches. The first-set between Schonfeld and Richman was a tie-break won by the Amherst player 7-6 (2) before she took the #4 match in two. Jumbo senior Lauren Hollender (Newton, MA) won the first set at #5 6-4 over Zoe Pangalos, who ended up winning the match with a 10-8 super tie-breaker.
Amherst improved to 12-1 overall and 5-0 in NESCAC. They next host Bates on Wednesday at 4 pm. Tufts fell to 5-6 overall and 2-2 in the league. Wesleyan comes in on Wednesday for a 3:30 pm conference match.
