MEDFORD - The Tufts women's tennis team won its third NESCAC match of the season with a strong 9-0 victory against Wesleyan at Voute Courts on Wednesday afternoon.
The #20 Jumbos dominated singles after sweeping the doubles matches to improve to 6-6 overall and 3-2 in the conference. The Cardinals fell to 3-8 and 1-4 in NESCAC.
The #2 and #3 doubles matches both finished 8-5 in Tufts' favor. Senior co-captain Lindsay Katz (Baltimore, MD) with junior Samantha Gann (Massapequa, NY) were the #2 winners, and sophomore Sophie Schonfeld (Washington, DC) teamed with senior co-captain Janice Lam (San Francisco, CA) as the third pair. In #1 doubles, Tufts and Wesleyan went to a tie-break, but Jumbos Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX) and Lauren Hollender (Newton, MA) took control with a 7-0 final to win the match.
Up 3-0, the Jumbos quickly clinched the victory in singles. Gann scored a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the second match giving Tufts a 4-0 advantage. The decisive fifth win was recorded by Hollender at #4, 6-3 and 6-0.
Katz and Lam both gave up just three games in their wins at #1 and #5 respectively. First-year Catherine Worley (New Orleans, CA) also had a straight set win on the sixth singles court. The shutout was finished off by Bowman, who won a third-set super tie-breaker at #3.
Tufts will host Middlebury in NESCAC action at home on Satudray at noon. The Cardinals are off until Sunday, when they host Connecticut College at 10 am.
