Seniors Lead Tufts Women's Lacrosse to 17-5 Rout of Wesleyan in NESCAC Game

Box Score
Kerry McGinn was one of six seniors honored prior to the game

MEDFORD - The Class of 2013 combined for 10 goals on Seniors Day for the Tufts women's lacrosse team as the Jumbos defeated Wesleyan 17-5 in NESCAC action at Bello Field Saturday.

Co-captain Kerry Eaton (Norfolk, MA) led the way with five goals, while Kaitlyn Leidl (Califon, NJ) and co-captain Meg Boland (New Canaan, CT) enjoyed career days offensively for the Jumbos. They were three of six seniors honored prior to the game.

Leidl scored a career-high six points with three goals and three assists. Boland, a defensive stalwart for Tufts, tallied two goals in a game for the first time. Collier Clegg (Evanston, IL) with four draw controls, Kerry McGinn (Westbury, NY) with one draw control, and goalie Tess Shapanka (Sudbury, MA) were other seniors contributing to the dominating victory.

Tufts kept its hopes alive for earning one of the eight berths into the 2013 NESCAC Championship with the win. They are currently tied for eighth place with Williams, whom the Jumbos defeated 12-5 during the season. Either a Tufts win at third-place Bowdoin on Wednesday or a Williams loss at second-place Middlebury that day will give the Jumbos the berth.

Tufts scored the first seven goals against Wesleyan, including three by first-year Caroline Ross (Sewickley, PA) and two from Eaton. Senior Lydia Kring (Philadelphia, PA) and first-year Martha Harding (Woodside, CA) scored two of the next three goals, pulling Wesleyan within 8-2 at the 16-minute mark of the first half.

Tufts would reach running time during the first half, scoring five times in the final 15 minutes to go up 13-3. First-year Brigid Bowser (Westborough, MA) had two of the strikes. The Jumbos finished the first 30 minutes with an 18-7 advantage in shots and 12-5 in draw controls.

Wesleyan's Kayla Ellman (Montclair, NJ) opened the second-half scoring at 25:01, but Tufts scored the next three and the vast majority of the second half was played in running time.

Bowser joined Leidl with the game-high point total of six, scoring three times and assisting three others. Ross finished with four goals. Junior Emily Wright (Ricmond, VA) won five draws and junior Gabby Horner (Allentown, NJ) had four as the Jumbos totaled 18 draw controls overall. Junior Kelley Cohen (Framingham, MA) finished with two caused turnovers and four groundballs. Shapanka made two saves in 40 minutes of action for the win, while sophomore Rachel Gallimore (Hanover, NH) finished up with two saves in 20 minutes.

The Cardinals had five different goal-scorers, while first-year Hannah Plappert (Newtown, PA) recorded their only assist. First-year Caitlin Majewski (Southbury, CT) caused two turnovers, while junior Abby D'Angelo (Weston, MA) led the visitors with three groundballs. First-year Nina Labovich (Alexandria, VA) made five saves in goal.

Tufts finished with a 29-15 lead in shots and scored on six of nine free-position chances.
