HARTFORD, CT - Senior co-captain Janice Lam (San Francisco, CA) posted a 6-4, 7-5 victory in fifth singles to clinch a close NESCSAC victory for the Tufts women's tennis team at Trinity College on Thursday, 5-4.
The Jumbos, ranked 20th nationally, moved over .500 in conference play (4-3) with the win and improved to 7-7 ovearall. Trinity, #21 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, fell to 10-5 and 3-4 NESCAC.
Tufts came out of doubles leading 2-1. The second duo of senior co-captain Lindsay Katz (Baltimore, MD) and junior Samantha Gann (Massapequa, NY), as well was the #3 pair of Lam and sophomore Sophie Schonfeld (Washington, DC), posted 8-3 victories. Trinity's #1 tandem of Hillary Hoyt and Melita Ferjanic had an 8-2 final.
The teams would split the six singles matches, with the Jumbos winning the bottom three to take the match. In addition to Lam, senior Lauren Hollender (Newton, MA) won 6-3, 6-1 in fourth singles and first-year Catherine Worley (New Orleans, LA) was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at #6.
The tightest match came at #2, where Hoyt - the 39th ranked player in the nation - won a third-set tie-breaker 7-6 (4) to top Gann. Bantams Ferjanic and Morgan Feldman had straight-set wins in the first and third matches, respectively.
Tufts plays two NESCAC matches in Maine to finish its conference season on Saturday. They are at Bates starting at 10 am and then go to Bowdoin for a 4 pm match. The Bantams host Williams on Saturday at noon.
