WATERVILLE, ME - Senior co-captain Lindsay Katz (Baltimore, MD) won at the first singles spot in straight sets and also was part of a doubles victory to help 19th-ranked Tufts University to an 8-1 win over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference women's tennis Friday.
Tufts moves to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while the Mules fall to 8-3 overall and 0-1 in the league.
Junior Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX) and Lauren Hollender (Newton, MA) were winners at first doubles for Tufts. Colby's Tess Perese (Minneapolis, MN) and Sarah Wiener (Mequon, WI) were 6-0 before the match.
Junior Samantha Gann (Massapequa, NY) won an opening set tie-breaker in beating Wiener at the second singles spot. Hollender, senior co-captain Janice Lam (San Francisco, CA), and Catherine Worley (New Orleans, LA) also had singles wins for the Jumbos. Katz combined with Gann for a victory at second doubles, while Sophie Schonfeld (Washington, DC) and Andrea Compton (Cincinnati, OH) had the third doubles victory.
Colby's Victoria Abel (Carlisle, MA) improved to 7-2 at the third singles position by splitting the two sets and then taking an 11-9 victory in a super tie-breaker.
Tufts returns home to host Hamilton in conference action on Sunday at 10 am. The Mules host the Continentals tomorrow at 1 pm.
