ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT men's lacrosse team earned revenge against Tufts with a dominating 14-5 victory over the Jumbos in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Championship on Wednesday afternoon at Tiger Stadium.
The Tigers (18-2) advance to the national semi-finals, where they will face the winner of today's Western New England at Cortland quarterfinal. The Jumbos' season ends at 16-5.
This was the third meeting in the series between the two programs, with all recently taking place deep in the NCAA Tournament. The Jumbos had won both previous games, eliminating the Tigers 16-12 in the 2011 semi-finals and 15-13 in last year's quarterfinals.
Today was a different story, as the Tigers opened up a 6-1 lead in the second quarter, led 10-3 at the half, and went into the fourth with an 11-3 margin. The final nine-goal deficit is Tufts' worst loss since the 2011 national championship game against Salisbury (19-7).
Tigers Eddie Kiesa and Jack Krzystan both scored three goals with an assist to lead the way. Kyle Aquin also had a four-point game, registering two goals with two assists. Allister Warren added two goals for the hosts. Pat Johnston made 15 saves on 19 Tufts shots at the net for a sterling .789 save percentage in the game.
Senior captain Andrew Fiamengo (New Fairfield, CT) was the only multi-point scorer for Tufts, posting a goal and an assist. Junior goalie Patton Watkins (Chattanooga, TN) stopped 17 shots as the Tigers put 31 balls on net.
After RIT scored the first two goals of the game by Taylor Wisman and Krzyston, Tufts' Fiamengo answered the second goal just 20 seconds later to make it a 2-1 game with 2:48 on the clock in the first. However, Aquin and Brad Gillies scored just 15 seconds apart in the final minute and the hosts had a 4-1 lead.
Krzyston and Zack Thompson extended the Tiger lead to 6-1 three minutes into the second quarter. The Jumbos were able to answer quickly again with sophomore Chris Schoenhut's (Mill Neck, NY) man-up goal at 11:09 pulling Tufts within 6-2.
Any Jumbo momentum at that point was derailed when the Tigers added three quick-strike goals in a span of 44 seconds. Aquin at 9:55, Matt Hossack at 9:27, and Kiesa at 9:11 put the hosts up 9-2. The margin went to 10-2 on another Kiesa goal at 4:19 before junior Peter Bowers (Berwyn, PA) tallied for Tufts to close the first-half scoring. RIT outscored the Jumbos 6-2 in the second and it was 10-3 at halftime.
Warren scored just 1:11 into the third quarter for RIT, giving them an 11-3 advantage. It would be the only goal of the period. Tufts was unable to score in the third as Johnston made seven saves.
Sophomore Cole Bailey's (Millersville, MD) goal at 11:35 of the fourth gave the Jumbos a flicker of hope down 11-4. The Tigers would get the next three though, by Warren, Krzyston, and Kiesa to put the finishing touches on their victory. Freshman Garrett Clarke (Ridgewood, NJ) had the final goal of the Tufts season with 27 seconds remaining.
RIT controlled the face-off circle, winning 16 of 23. Tyler Brooks-Lambert did most of the work, winning 13 times. The Tigers posted a final tally of 48-32 on groundballs, with defenseman Elliott Cowburn adding six to the cause. Senior defenseman Matt Callahan (Acton, MA) caused three turnovers and collected two groundballs for Tufts. Shots were 43-34 in favor of RIT.
