NORTHAMPTON – The Tufts women's squash team opened last weekend on a strong note, defeating William Smith, 7-2, Friday night at the Smith Round Robin. The Jumbos received wins in the top seven positions to secure the win.
Sophomore Paget Stanco (Rye, NY) had one of the tougher matches of the night in the number one position as it took five games for her to win over the Heron's Allison Rubin, 11-8, 7-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-5. Jumbos playing in the second through fourth positions had an easier time, as all of them won in three games.
Junior Paige Dahlman (Denver, CO) cruised past Delaney Teceno in the number two position, 11-9, 11-3, 11-1. Fellow classmate Ann Bellinger followed that with just as convincing of a win in the number three position, topping Eleanor Hayes, 11-8, 11-4, 11-4.
In the number four position first-year Anna Bezahler (Philadelphia, PA) used three games to beat Justine Shank, 11-7, 11-5, 11-4. Fellow rookie Lynn Cheng (Singapore) played a bit of a closer three games, but was still able to complete the three game victory in the number five position, 12-10, 11-8, 11-5.
Sophomore Tammara Gary (Exeter, NH) played in the sixth spot and handed William Smith's Nellie Lindecke a three game loss, 11-1, 11-3, 12-10. Wrapping up the wins for the Jumbos was senior Caroline Howe (Carlisle, MA) in the number seven position, as she topped the Heron's Erin Casey in four games, 11-8, 11-8, 9-11, 11-5.
Freshman Rowan Rice (Rye, NY) forced her match in the number eight position to five games, but eventually fell, 5-11, 11-13, 12-10, 11-6, 11-7. Junior Charlotte Griffiths (Ardmore, PA) played in the nine spot, but wasn't able to beat her William Smith opponent, falling in three games.
The Jumbos followed the win on Friday night by taking on two NESCAC opponents on Saturday. They fell to Colby before beating Conn. College, 5-4. The women will be back in action on Wednesday as they host Boston College at the Belmont Hill School at 8:00 pm. This will be the second meeting this season between the two teams, as Tufts beat the Eagles earlier this year, 5-4.
