CAMBRIDGE- Wrapping up a the busiest week of their schedule so far, the Tufts volleyball team took on local-rival MIT. But, the engineers edged the Jumbos in all three sets to take a 3-0 victory. MIT also hosted Simmons, and the Engineers and the Jumbos both were able to beat the Sharks on Saturday.
With the win (25-20, 26-24, 25-22) the Engineers move to 17-2 on the season. The Jumbos are now 9-7 overall with a 3-1 NESCAC mark.
For MIT senior Jenny Astrachan compiled 15 kills, a .324 hitting percentage, four digs, and two blocks for MIT as sophomore Megan Gebhard registered 13 kills. Junior Meryl Gibbs chipped in six kills on 10 errorless attempts while rookie Alli Davanzo bolstered the front row with five kills and four blocks. Freshman Clare Farley and sophomore Tori Wuthrich both amassed 12 digs as senior Nicole Gagnier finished with 34 assists, four digs, and two blocks.
On the Jumbos end, senior tri-captain Hayley Hopper tallied 11 kills, six digs, and three aces while fellow classmate and tri-captain Isabel Kuhel posted seven kills, a .500 hitting performance, and a match-high five blocks. Sophomore Mary Maccabee and classmate Elizabeth Ahrens rounded out the attack with seven and six kills, respectively, as junior Kyra Baum produced 37 assists and two aces. Junior Carolina Berger paced Tufts with 10 digs while classmate Maddie Kuppe notched nine digs and two aces. In two sets, freshman Katie Kim generated four blocks.
Both teams return to conference play this week. On Tuesday, Oct. 7 MIT will travel to NEWMAC rival Wellesley College. Tufts returns to action on Friday, Oct. 10 when it hosts Wesleyan University for a NESCAC match-up.
