CAMBRIDGE – After a convincing 3-0 win on Friday night over NESCAC foe Bates, the Jumbo volleyball team picked up right where they left off Saturday afternoon, topping Simmons, 3-0, in a match hosted by MIT. Senior tri-captain Hayley Hopper had 16 kills in the win for the Jumbos while sophomore Mary Maccabee turned in seven of her own.
The Jumbos (9-6, 3-1 NESCAC) beat the Sharks, 25-12, 25-10, 25-20, for their second win of the week. Immediately after the conclusion of the match, the Jumbos took on host MIT.
Hopper's 16 kills led the Jumbo offense, which finished the match with a solid .343 hitting percentage. In addition to Hopper's 16 and Maccabee's seven, first-year Gilliam Wahleithner had six kills and sophomore Elizabeth Ahrens and junior Maddie Kuppe each had five kills.
Junior Kyra Baum handled nearly all of the setting for the Jumbos, finishing with 39 assists. Junior Carolina Berger, Baum, Kuppe and rookie Alex Garrett all had eight digs for Tufts.
Simmons was led by rookie Emmee Ashby who had nine kills. Sophomore Alex Itasaka finished with 13 digs while classmate Kat Guillotte had eight of her own. Setting for the Sharks was sophomore Andalyn Duke who had 20 assists.
Simmons faced off with MIT before taking on the Jumbos, but lost 3-0. With the two losses the Sharks move to 3-12 on the season. They will take the court again when they travel to Rivier for a 7:00 pm contest on Tuesday evening.
The Jumbos faced off with MIT immediately following the match with Simmons. They will be back in action when they return home on Friday night for the first time since September 12. The Jumbos have a 7:00 pm match with Wesleyan on Friday followed by a 2:00 pm showdown with Trinity on Saturday.
