MEDFORD – The visiting MIT women's tennis team jumped out to a 2-1 lead in doubles play on Wednesday evening, and used that lead to secure a 5-4 win at the Voute Tennis Courts. The Jumbos and the Engineers each won three singles matches, but the doubles lead secured the win for the visitors.
The Jumbos were able to secure a win at #3 doubles as the duo of sophomore Conner Calabro and rookie Zoe Miller were able to cruise past MIT sophomore Krystal Lai and first-year Dora Tzeng, 8-2. The Engineers picked up a win at #1 singles as their pair of junior Victoria Tam and sophomore Elysa Kohrs topped the Jumbo pair of sophomore Alexa Meltzer and freshman Aandrita Deb, 8-4. The other Engineer win came at #2 singles as rookie Sonya Das and senior Michelle Dutt topped first-year Lauren Louks and sophomore Chelsea Hayashi, 8-1.
In singles play Hayashi was able to earn a 6-2, 6-0, win over MIT freshman Jae Hyun Kim at #6 singles to even up the score at two apiece. Miller gave the Jumbos the 3-2 lead with a win over Lai at #5 singles. An Engineer win at #1 singles by Kohrs over Deb, 7-6, 6-4, evened up the score once again at three.
Meltzer won at #2 singles, topping Das, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to once again take the lead for the Jumbos. But, the Engineers would be able to secure wins at #3 singles and #4 singles to earn the 5-4 win. Sophomore Wendi Kong edged Louks at #3 singles, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 while Tzeng battled with Calabro at #4 singles, but earned the 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 win.
This was the first dual match of the fall season for the Jumbos (0-1). They will be back in action on October 15 when they travel to Babson for a 2:00 pm contest. MIT moves to 7-0 on the season this fall. They return to action on Friday when they travel to Clark for a 5:00 pm match.
