Rookie Brad Wong won at singles and doubles for the Jumbos against Denison

CLAREMONT, CA – The Tufts men's tennis team was back in action on Monday afternoon for the first time in five months. The Jumbos topped the Bid Red of Denison, 6-3, at Claremont Mudd Scripts in their first match of the spring season.
The Jumbos dug themselves a small hole early, going down 2-1 in doubles play. Rookie Brad Wong (Granite Bay, CA) and sophomore Rob Jacobson (Winnetka, IL) earned the win in doubles play for the Jumbos, topping their Denison opponents, 8-3 at #2 doubles.
Sophomore Nik Telkedzhiev (Plovdiv, Bulgaria) and junior Brian Tan (Orinda, CA) played at #1 doubles, but were topped by Denison's Juan Guerra and Grant Veltman, 8-5. Similarly, at #3 doubles, senior Austin Blau (Roslyn, NY) and freshman Kevin Kelly (Ashburn, VA) weren't able to beat the Big Red's Jackson O'Gorman-Bean and Shankar Rajupet.
Though the Jumbos weren't able to win the advantage in doubles play, they did dominate singles play, winning five of six of the singles matches. At #1 doubles, Telkedzhiev lost the first set 1-6 before coming back to top Guerra of Denison, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. Jacobson cruised through his match at #2 singles, beating Andrew Marczak, 7-5, 7-5. Taking two of three sets at #3 singles, Tan beat his Denison opponent to add to the Jumbo's lead.
Wong was able to down Casey Cempre at #4 singles, 6-4, 6-2, while senior Zach Ladwig (Chelmsford, MA) cruised past Graham Gettel, 6-2, 6-1, at #6 singles. At #5 singles Blau wasn't able to top O'Gorman-Bean.
The Jumbos will be back in action on Tuesday as they take on Sewanee at 11:00 am. They will follow that match up with matches against Pomona-Pitzer and Occidental on Wednesday, before concluding their spring break trip with a match against NESCAC-rival Trinity at occidental on Friday.
