Freshman Brad Wong won in singles play for the Jumbos on Wednesday

CLAREMONT, CA – The Tufts men's tennis team took on #16 Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday afternoon, but the Sagehens were too much for the Jumbos as Tufts fell, 7-2. Freshman Brad Wong (Granite Bay, CA) and fellow classmate Kevin Kelly (Ashburn, VA) earned the wins for the Jumbos.
Wong took on Pomona-Pitzer's Kevin Wei at #4 singles and cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 victory. Kelly needed a little bit more to top the Sagehen's Thomas Low at #6 singles, be he was also able to secure a 6-4, 7-6(4) victory for the Jumbos.
The Tufts men found themselves behind early as they dropped three doubles matches to start play. Sophomore Nik Telkedzhiev (Plovdiv, Bulgaria) and junior Brian Tan (Orinda, CA) played at number one doubles and challenged Pomona-Pitzer's Anthony Bello and Chris Wiechert, falling 8-6 at #1 doubles. Similarly, at #2 doubles sophomore Rob Jacobson (Winnetka, IL) and Wong fell to their Sagehen counterparts by an identical score, 8-6. Senior Matt Pataro (Miami, FL) and fellow classmate Zach Ladwig (Chelmsford, MA) rounded out the doubles line-up, but Sam Crawford and Joshua Kim were able to earn the win at #3 doubles for Pomona-Pitzer.
Telkedzhiev played at #1 singles, but wasn't able to top Wiechert, falling by a score of, 6-3, 7-5. At #2 singles, Jacobson took on Connor Hudson but ended up losing, 6-2, 6-4. Pomona-Pitzer's Graham Maassen was too much for Tan at #3 singles, as the Sagehen topped tan, 6-2, 6-3. Rounding out the singles line up at #3 singles was Ladwig who fell to his Pomona-Pitzer opponent, 7-5, 6-4.
The Jumbos followed their match with the Sagehens with a 6:30 pm showdown with Occidental. The Jumbos were able to rebound from their early loss to top Occidental, 8-1. The men now have a day off before they take on NESCAC rival Trinity on Friday at 9:00 am.
