Freshman Conner Calabro won in singles play against Azusa Pacificon Friday afternoon

AZUSA, CA – The Tufts women's tennis team resumed play on their spring break trip, but fell to Azusa Pacific, 7-2, on Friday afternoon. Freshman Conner Calabro (Sherman Oaks, CA) and sophomore Catherine Worley (New Orleans, LA) won in singles play for the Jumbos.
Calabro played at #3 singles and had a tough duel with Danae Ingwaldson, but was able to earn the win, 6-1, 4-6, 10-7. Worley cruised to a two set win at #6 singles, topping Bethany Duval , 6-2, 6-3.
The Jumbos had a tough day in doubles play as they were in all three doubles matches but weren't able to earn a win. Senior Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX) and freshman Alexa Meltzer (New York, NY) played at #1 doubles but fell to the Azusa Pacific duo of Ingwaldson and Natalie Johnson, 8-5. Similarly, the match at #2 doubles was decided by an 8-5 score as Emily Harris and Kim Koetterheinrich topped Calabro and rookie Chelsea Hayashi (San Anselmo, CA). At #3 doubles, senior Samantha Gann (Massapequa, NY) and Jacquline Baum (Highland Park, IL) fell to their Cougar opponents, 8-4.
Gann also played at #1 singles and fell to Emily Harris in two sets. Meltzer also lost in two sets at #2 singles. Bowman took on Lindsey Yeom at #4 singles, but wasn't able to earn the win. Senior Rebecca Kimmel (Longmeadow, MA) rounded out the singles line up at #5 singles, but wasn't able to top her Azusa opponent.
The Jumbos round out their spring break trip on Saturday as they take on Claremont Mudd Scripps at 2:00 pm. The Jumbos will then travel back to Medford where they being NESCAC play the following weekend against Bowdoin.
