CLAREMONT, CA – The #18 Tufts women's tennis team rounded up its spring break trip on Saturday afternoon as they took on #5 ranked Claremont Mudd-Scripps. However, the Athenas proved to be too much for the Jumbos to handle as they topped Tufts, 8-1. Rookie Jacquline Baum (Highland Park, IL) picked up the lone win for the Jumbos at #6 singles.
Baum took on the host team's Yvonne Likomanova at #6 singles, and was able to edge the Athena player, 3-6, 6-2, 10-6. Baum also competed in the doubles line up at #3 doubles with senior Samantha Gann (Massapequa, NY) but wasn't able to find a win there.
Senior Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX) and first-year Alexa Meltzer (New York, NY) played at #1 doubles, but weren't able to top the duo of Caroline Ward and Katie Kuosman. At #2 doubles freshman Conner Calabro (Sherman Oaks, CA) and classmate Chelsea Hayashi (San Anselmo, CA) also had trouble with their Athena opponents, falling to Chloe Dobbert and Sarah Kukino.
Gann played at #1 singles but fell to Ward in two sets. Similarly at #2 singles Meltzer wasn't able to top her Claremont Mudd Scripps counterpart. Calabro was beaten by Dobbert at #3 singles in two sets. Sophomore Cartherine Worley (New Orleans, LA) played at #4 singles, but was edged by Kukino in two sets. Senior Rebecca Kimmel (Longmeadow, MA) rounded out the Jumbos singles line up at #5 singles, but was topped by Crystal Lim.
The duel with the Athenas finished up the Jumbo's spring trip, as they head back to Medford with a 1-3 record this spring. During the trip the women topped #30 ranked Denison, 7-2. They also played #14 La Verne and Azusa Pacific in addition to #5 Claremon Mudd Scripps, but were not able to secure wins in those matches.
They will now prepare to open NESCAC play as they host #7 ranked Bowdoin on Saturday, March 29 at 3:00 pm on the Voute courts.
