Senior Shelci Bowman won in singles play for the Jumbos against Bowdoin

MEDFORD, MA – The #18 Tufts women's tennis team opened up NESCAC play on Saturday afternoon, hosting #7 ranked Bowdoin. The Polar Bears edged the Jumbos, 7-2 in a match that was forced indoors because of weather conditions.
The Jumbos received two wins in singles play. First-year Conner Calabro (Sherman Oaks, CA) cruised past the Polar Bears Joulia Likhanskaia at #3 singles, 6-0, 7-5. Senior Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX) added a win of her own at #4 singles, downing Samantha Stalder, 6-2, 6-2.
The women found themselves down early after having trouble in doubles play, and falling in all three doubles matches. Bowman and rookie Jacqueline Baum (Highland Park, IL) were narrowly topped at #1 singles by the Polar Bear's duo of Likhanskaia and Emma Lewis, 8-6. The match at #2 doubles was nearly as close as freshman Alexa Meltzer (New York, NY) and senior Samantha Gann (Massapequa, NY) fell to their Bowdoin counterparts, 8-5. Calabro and fellow classmate Chelsea Hayashi (asdlfj) rounded out the doubles lineup at #3, losing to Pilar Giffenig and Tiffany Cheng, 8-3.
Gann took on Cheng at #1 singles play but wasn't able to pull out a win, falling, 6-2, 6-3. Meltzer faced off against Kate Winingham at #2 singles and took her second set to extra points, as she was edged by her Bowdoin opponent, 6-2, 7-5. At #5 singles, Baum challenged Emma Lewis but wasn't able to come up with a win. Sophomore Catherine Worley (New Orleans, LA) rounded out the singles line up at #6 but also had trouble with her opponent, falling 6-3, 6-2.
The Jumbos move to 1-5 in spring play with the loss, and 0-1 in NESCAC play. They will return to the courts on Tuesday, April 1 when they lost local rival Wellesley at 4:00. The Polar Bears are now 8-2 on the season, and 2-0 in conference play. They travel to Brandeis for a Sunday match against the Judges.
