Men's Tennis Cruises Past Wesleyan for 8-1 NESCAC Win Sunday Afternoon

Junior Brian Tan won in singles and doubles play for the Jumbos against Wesleyan

MEDFORD, MA – The Tufts men's tennis team ended the weekend on a high note, downing Wesleyan 8-1 Sunday afternoon in a match forced indoors because of rain.  The men used a 2-1 lead after doubles play, and won all six singles matches to earn the 8-1 win.

Sophomore Nik Telkedzhiev (Plovdiv, Bulgaria) and junior Brian Tan (Orinda, CA) helped the Jumbos take an early lead by topping the Cardinals' Zachary Brint and Greg Lyon at #1 doubles, 8-4.  Also picking up a win for the Jumbos in doubles play was senior Austin Blau (Roslyn, NY) and sophomore Nick Cary (Brookline, MA), who beat Michael King and Michael Liu at #3 doubles, 8-3.

The Jumbos only built upon that early advantage, taking all six singles matches.  Telkedzhiev had one of the closer battles of the day at #1 singles, facing off against Jake Roberts but edging his opponent for the win, 6-3, 6-7(3-7), 11-9.  Sophomore Rob Jacobson (Winnetka, IL) took the courts at #2 singles, and earned a win over Liu, 7-5, 6-1.

Freshman Brad Wong (Granite Bay, CA) had little trouble at #3 singles, defeating Wesleyan's Sam Rudovsky, 6-1, 6-2.  The match at #4 singles was a little closer, but Tan was able to come away with a win for the Jumbos, topping Stephen Monk, 6-4, 7-5. Blau cruised to a win at #5 singles over the Cardinal's King, 6-4, 6-0.  Rounding out the singles line up for the Jumbos was senior Zach Ladwig (Chelmsford, MA), who had his work cut out for him at #6 singles as Brint challenged him, but eventually fell, 5-7, 6-4, 10-6 to give the Jumbos the singles sweep.

The one win for the visitors came at #2 doubles as Jake Roberts and Rudovsky were able to edge Jacobson and Wong, 8-6.

With the win the Jumbos move to 4-3 this spring, and 1-2 in NESCAC play.  The Jumbos will be back in action on Wednesday as they host Gustavus Adolphus at 4:00 pm. Wesleyan is now 7-3 on the season, and 2-2 in NESCAC play. The Cardinals take the courts again on Sunday, April 6 as they travel for a 10:00 am face off with Colby.
