MEDFORD, MA – The #18 Tufts women's tennis team got back on track on Tuesday afternoon, topping local rival Wellesley, 6-3, in a match that was played indoors because of weather conditions. The Jumbos swept doubles play and brought home wins at #3, #4 and #6 singles to earn the victory.
The women got out to a great start, claiming an early lead with three wins in doubles play. Senior Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX) and first-year Jacqueline Baum (Highland Park, IL) had the toughest doubles match of the day, facing off against the Blue's Sojung Lee and Carina Chen. The duo worked for a 9-8 (8-6) victory at #1 doubles.
Rookie Alexa Meltzer (New York, NY) and senior Samantha Gann (Massapequa, NY) played at #2 doubles and earned an 8-4 win over Wellesley's Andjela Stojkovic and Lina Ye. At #3 doubles freshman Conner Calabro (Sherman Oaks, CA) and fellow classmate Chelsea Hayashi (San Anselmo, CA) completed the doubles sweep for the Jumbos with an 8-3 win over Kendall Tada and Samantha Stone.
The Jumbos used that early advantage as they were only able to take three of six of the singles matches. At #3 singles Calabro notched a win over Ye in two sets, 6-2, 6-3. Similarly, at #4 singles Bowman cruised past Tada for a 6-1, 6-1 win. The last win for the Jumbos came from senior Rebecca Kimmel (Longmeadow, MA) at #6 singles who downed Stone, 6-0, 6-1.
Playing at #1 singles Gann dueled with the Blue's Lee but was unable to earn a victory, falling 6-4, 3-6, 10-5. Meltzer was also able to take a set from Chen at #2 singles, but ended up falling, 6-4, 1-6, 10-8. Baum rounded out the singles line up for the Jumbos at #5 singles and was edged by her Wellesley opponent, 6-3, 3-6, 10-5.
The Jumbos are now 2-4 this spring and will return to action on Friday when they host Colby for a 4:00 pm NESCAC match. The Blue are now 0-3 this spring and will compete in the Nor'Easter Bowl at Trinity this weekend.
