Men's Varsity Crew Loses Races to Bates and New Hampshire on Malden River

MALDEN - The Tufts Varsity Women scored the big victory of the day Saturday with a convincing win over nationally ranked #3 Bates College in a 26-race card on the Malden River.

The Lady Jumbos overcame a flat opening performance against #1 ranked Wellesley, with a stunning row through Bates in front of fans at the Shoemaker Boathouse.

In what would be the only victory of the day against nationally-ranked competition the Jumbos made their move with 900 meters to go on the 2,000 meter river course and went from a deck lead to a length over the next 400 meters, and then held off a late Bates parry and slammed the door with about 400 meters to go.

In men's competition, the Varsity Jumbos showed grit and spirit in rows against Bates and New Hampshire, but the visitors from the north had too much grit for the men from Medford to prevail.

Tufts now prepares for a busy Easter weekend, with a dual race with Middlebury College home on Saturday, and the Brown and Baker Cups in Worcester with WPI and a host of others on Easter Sunday.
