MEDFORD - Thirteen players scored goals, including five by John Uppgren and four each by Beau Wood and Cole Bailey as the #9 Tufts men's lacrosse team defeated #20 Amherst, 25-12, in NESCAC play at Bello Field Saturday.
The 25 goals are the most ever by a Tufts team in a conference game. It is the third-highest total in team history. With the win, the Jumbos improved to 10-2 overall and 6-1 in the league.
The Lord Jeffs, led by four goals from Aaron Mathias and two goals with three assists by Quinn Moroney, lost for the first time in four games. Amherst is now 9-3 overall and 5-3 in NESCAC.
The game featured 37 goals, 40 face-offs, 20 penalties, 108 shots (67 for Tufts) and three goalie changes by the Lord Jeffs. The Jumbos scored six man-up goals in 11 opportunities.
Tufts scored the first six goals of the game, with Bailey contributing three goals and an assist. Amherst got the next two by Quinn Moroney and Devin Acton, but Tufts led 8-2 at the end of the first.
The second quarter would be the most modest of the game, as both teams scored three goals. Quinn Moroney scored twice and had an assist in the frame for Amherst. The Jumbos led 11-5 at halftime.
Tufts built some serious separation by scoring four of the first five goals in the second half. Wood had two of them, including one at 10:17 that put the Jumbos up 15-6. The teams traded goals for the rest of the period and it was 17-9 Jumbos after three.
Like the first period, Tufts would score eight times in the fourth. Uppgren scored the first two man-up and had three overall in the period helping Tufts to the 25-12 final.
Sophomore Conor Helfrich continued to perform well on face-offs for Tufts, winning 26 of 32. Junior Chris Schoenhut finsihed with three goals and an assist. Senior goalie Patton Watkins earned the win with 16 saves in 52:34 of action, including seven in the first period.
Matt Killian scored a pair of goals for the visitors. Senior Greg Majno took the loss in the Amherst goal, playing the first period. Freshman Cody Tranbuger led four Lord Jeff goalies with six saves. They finished with 15 saves total.
Tufts had entered the week tied for first in the NCAA Division III Statistics with Cabrini for Scoring Offense at 18 goals per game. Today was the sixth time this season that Tufts has scored 20 or more goals.
