Samantha Gann battled her Williams counterpart at #1 singles on Saturday

MEDFORD – On Saturday afternoon the #18 Tufts women's tennis team took on #1 nationally ranked Williams College at the Voute Tennis Courts, but the Jumbos weren't able to top the Ephs, falling 9-0.
Williams jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after doubles play and the Jumbos just weren't able to come back. Senior Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX) and freshman Jacqueline Baum (Highland Park, IL) played at # 1 doubles and took on the Williams duo of Maria Pylypiv and Kathleen Elkins, falling by a score of 8-4.
At #2 doubles first-year Alexa Meltzer (New York, NY) and senior Samantha Gann (Massapequa, NY) faced off against the Ephs' Linda Shin and Alex Stone, losing 8-2. Rookie Conner Calabro (Sherman Oaks, CA) and sophomore Catherine Worley played at #3 doubles against the visiting Hannah Atkinson and Maya Hart, but weren't able to top the Eph duo, falling 8-4.
Gann took on the Eph's Kara Showmaker at #1 singles and put up a fight, but ended up falling, 7-6(6), 6-0. At #2 singles Meltzer faced off against Elkins, but wasn't able to top her opponent, 7-5, 6-0. At the #3 singles position Calabro and Shin battled, but the Ephs' Shin earned the 6-1, 6-1 win.
Bowman played at #4 singles against Rebecca Curran of Williams, but wasn't able to top her opponent, 6-0, 6-3. Baum battled at #5 singles but wasn't able to down Monica Pastor, losing 6-1, 7-6(5). Rounding out the Jumbos singles lineup at #6 singles was senior Rebecca Kimmel (Longmeadow, MA) who fell to Atkinson, 6-0, 7-5.
With the loss the Jumbos are now 7-6 this season and 3-2 in conference play. The women will return to the courts on Tuesday when they travel to Amherst for a 4:00 pm match. Williams now sits at 13-0 this season and 3-0 in NESCAC action. The Ephs will host Hamilton and Trinity tomorrow at 10:00 am and 2:00 pm, respectively.
