MEDFORD – The #28 Tufts men's tennis team put another tally in the win column on Friday afternoon as they topped local rival and #30 Brandeis, 6-3, at the Voute Courts. The men jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after doubles play, and won four of six singles matches to secure their eighth win of the season.
Freshman Brad Wong (Granite Bay, CA) and junior Brian Tan (Orinda, CA) edged the Brandeis duo of Michael Secular and Brian Granoff at #2 doubles, 8-6, to put the Jumbos on the board. At #3 doubles senior Austin Blau (Roslyn, NY) and sophomore Nick Cary (Brookline, MA) gave the Jumbos another win by topping the Brandeis pair of Alec Siegel and Ryan Bunis, 8-5.
Senior Matt Pataro (Miami, FL) and freshman Benjamin Battle (Delray Beach, FL) played at #1 doubles for the Jumbos, but the Brandeis duo of Danny Lubarsky and Michael Arguello were able to earn the win for the Judges, 8-3.
The Jumbos capitalized on the 2-1 doubles lead, using that momentum to win four of six singles matches. Wong took on Arguello at #2 singles and cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win. Tan also had little trouble with his Brandeis opponent, playing at #3 singles and topping Lubarsky, 6-1, 6-3.
The match at #5 singles was a little closer as senior Zach Ladwig (Chelmsford, MA) battled the Judges' Siegel, but was able to pull through for the 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 win. Cary turned in the final win for the Jumbos at #6 singles, downing Secular, 6-0, 6-1.
Sophomore Jay Glickman played at #1 singles for the Jumbos, but was topped by Brandeis' Granoff, 6-3, 6-3. The other Brandeis win came at #4 singles as the Jumbos' Blau was able to take the first set, but ended up falling to Bunis, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
The Jumbos are now 8-7 this season with a 3-5 conference mark. They will take the courts again on April 23 as they host MIT for a 3:30 pm start time. Brandeis moves to 9-6 overall and will play again on April 21 when they also take on MIT.
