MALDEN - The Tufts University crew teams won five out of nine races against NESCAC foe Middlebury College today on the Malden River. Visiting Middlebury won the two varsity eight races, but the rest of the Tufts programs were first in five out of seven starts.
In varsity eight competition, the Middlebury women had a decisive victory of 7:11.05 to Tufts' 7:34.93 finish. The men's varsity eight race was also won handily by the Panthers, who timed 6:35.27 to Tufts' 6:55.45 row.
The biggest win for the Jumbos came from the men's second varsity eight, which won by nearly 22 seconds with their 7:06.73 time over the 2,000 meters. Middlebury came in at 7:28.36. The Jumbo men also won in novice four by a better than nine-seconds margin, 7:42.24 to 7:51.36.
The top performers for the Tufts women was the third varsity eight boat, which was almost 13 seconds faster than Middlebury. The Jumbos crossed the finish line in 8:13.70 and Middlebury finished at 8:26.80.
The women's second varsity eight and novice eight also had wins as the Tufts women won three of five overall. The second varsity eight had a 7:51.90 to 7:59.27 victory. The novice boat won by nearly two lengths at 8:46.5 to 8:53.4.
Besides the varsity eight races, Middlebury also won in women's novice four (8:03.6 to 8:24.3), which was a 1,500-meter race, and men's novice eight (7:04.22 to 7:15.92).
The races were rowed in a slight head current on the Malden with winds north to northwest at 14-18 knots, gusting to 26 knots.
