Women's Tennis Wins Second Match of the Day with 8-1 Win Over Bates

Rebecca Kimmel was one of three seniors honored on Saturday for the Jumbos

MEDFORD – In their second NESCAC match of the day, the #18 Tufts women's tennis team came through strong yet again and topped Bates, 8-1, at the Voute Courts.  The Jumbos edged #15 Trinity earlier in the day, 5-4, for the first win of a busy Senior Day schedule.

The Jumbos jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with three wins in doubles play.  Senior Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX) and freshman Jacqueline Baum (Highland Park, IL) topped the Bates duo of Elena Mandzhukova and Elizabeth Erbafina, 8-6, at #1 doubles.

At #2 doubles, freshman Alexa Meltzer (New York, NY) and senior Samantha Gann (Massapequa, NY) cruised past the Bobcat pair of Kristen Doerer and Kate Rosenthal, 8-1.  The third win for the Jumbos came at the hands of first-year Conner Calabro (Sherman Oaks, CA) and fellow classmate Chelsea Hayashi (San Anselmo, CA), as they downed Lucy Brennan and Olivia Voccola, 8-3, at #3 doubles.

The Jumbos showed no let up after doubles play, taking five of the six singles matches to earn the convincing, 8-1 win.  Sophomore Catherine Worley (New Orleans, LA) was first to knock off her Bates opponent, topping Voccola at #6 singles, 6-0, 6-3.  Meltzer was next to turn in a win as it was the fifth and match winning win, and it happened by the same score as she cruised past Brennan at #2 singles.

Bowman took the courts at #4 singles, and was able to down her Bates opponent, Doerer, by a 7-5, 6-3 tally.  At #5 singles Baum faced off against Rosenthal, and came through for the Jumbos with a 6-3, 6-1 victory.  The last singles win came at #1 singles from Gann as she battled Mandzhukova, but was able to edge her Bobcat opponent, 7-6(3), 1-6, 10-8.

The lone win for the Bobcats came at #3 singles as Erbafina was able to edge Calabro, 6-7(4), 6-3, 10-6.

With the two wins today the Jumbos move to 9-7 overall with a 5-3 conference mark.  Bates is now 7-7 this season with a 2-3 record in NESCAC play.

The Jumbos will be back in action on April 25 as they close out their regular season play with a final NESCAC match at Middlebury at 3:00 pm.  The Bobcats also resume play on April 25 with a NESCAC match at Trinity at 4:00 pm.
