Women's Tennis Cruises Past Colby For First NESCAC Win of Season

Rebecca Kimmel picked up a win for the Jumbos in singles play on Friday afternoon

MEDFORD – On Friday afternoon the #18 Tufts women's tennis team picked up right where they left off on Tuesday, cruising past NESCAC rival Colby, 9-0, in a match forced indoors because of cold temperatures.  The Jumbos used momentum from an early doubles lead to win six singles matches as well and notch their first NESCAC win of the season.

The women jumped out to a convincing early lead after doubles play as they dominated all three of their doubles matches.  Senior Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX) and freshman Jacqueline Baum (Highland Park, IL) downed their White Mule opponents, 8-0, at #1 doubles.  Freshman Alexa Meltzer (New York, NY) and senior Samantha Gann (Massapequa, NY) also had no trouble with Colby's Maggie Sutherland and Lucy O'Keeffe at #2 doubles, winning, 8-1.  The third win came with the same score, as rookie Conner Calabro (Sherman Oaks, CA) and fellow classmate Chelsea Hayashi (San Anselmo, CA) topped Anne Morris and Danielle Levine at #3 doubles.

Singles play was just as dominating for the Jumbos.  Gann had the biggest challenge of the day at #1 singles as Colby's Tess Perese fell to her Jumbo opponent, 6-1, 6-4.  Meltzer took the courts at #2 singles and collected a 6-0, 6-0 win over Bogo.  At #3 singles, Calabro earned the win over the White Mules' Erica Talamo, 6-1, 6-3.

The second half of the Jumbos line up might have had the most convincing wins of the match as the Jumbos only dropped two sets in the last three singles positions.  Bowman played at #4 singles and topped Sutherland, 6-2, 6-0.  Senior Rebecca Kimmel (Longmeadow, MA) played at #5 singles for the Jumbos and collected a 6-0, 6-0 win over Levine.  Sophomore Catherine Worley (New Orleans, LA) rounded out the lineup for the Jumbos and collected her own 6-0, 6-0 win at #6 singles against O'Keeffe.

With the win the Jumbos move to 3-4 this spring season and will travel to Hamilton for a 10:00 am Sunday showdown with NESCAC foe Hamilton. The White Mules are also now 3-4 this spring and return back to action on Sunday as they host NESCAC rival Wesleyan.
