WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The Tufts men's tennis team traveled to take on #3 Williams College on Saturday afternoon in a NESCAC match, but the Ephs proved to be too much for the Jumbos to handle as the hosts came away with the 7-2 win. The Jumbos received wins from senior Austin Blau (Roslyn, NY) and sophomore Nick Cary (Brookline, MA) in singles play.
Blau took on Wililam's Alexander Schidlovsky at #4 singles and was able to outlast the Eph for the 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 win to put the Jumbos on the board. Cary added a tally to the win column at #6 singles over the hosts' Brian Astrachan, 7-5, 6-4.
The Jumbos found themselves down early as they fell in all three doubles matches. Junior Brian Tan (Orinda, CA) and senior Matt Pataro (Miami, FL) took the court at #1 doubles, but were topped by the Williams duo of Schidlovsky and Matt Micheli. At #2 doubles sophomore Rob Jacobson (Winnetka, IL) and freshman Brad Wong (Granite Bay, CA) faced off against the Eph pair of Astrachan and Brian Harron but ended up falling, 8-4. At #3 doubles Blau and Cary battled Williams' Jose Raventos and Rohan Shastri but were just edged, 8-6.
Jacobson took the courts at #1 singles for the Jumbos, but Micheli was dominant in the match, winning, 6-0, 6-1. Wong gave his Williams counterpart a challenge at #2 singles, eventually falling, 7-6(2), 6-3. Tan also challenged his Eph opponent at #3 singles, but ended up losing, 6-4, 6-3. Pataro rounded out the Jumbos singles lineup at #5 singles, but was bested by Raventos, 6-4, 6-2.
With the loss the Jumbos move to 5-5 this year and 1-3 in NESCAC play. They will return to action on April 10 as they host NESCAC foe Connecticut College at 3:30 pm. Williams is now 8-2 overall and 2-0 in NESCAC play. They will be on the courts again when they host Middlebury on April 11 at 4:00 pm.
