Novice Eight Takes Fifth for Top Men's Crew Race at New England Championships

WORCESTER - The Tufts University crew teams raced six boats at the 2014 New England Rowing Championships today on Lake Quinsigamond. A seventh-place finish for the women's varsity eight and a fifth by the men's novice eight were the top performances.

The women's varsity eight won the petite final with a 7:12.239 time. That was faster than the fifth and sixth finishers in the grand final. The Jumbos missed qualifying for the grand final by placing third in their heat (7:22.142), but produced a great second row to take seventh out of 16 teams overall

The men's novice eight timed 7:10.142 in the first heat to qualify for the grand final, where they were fifth of nine with a 7:01.959 finish.

The Jumbos also had a sixth place run in the women's third varsity eight, which qualified for the grand final. They rowed 8:03.950 in the final after getting there with a 8:00.269 that was third in the second heat.

The women's novice eight placed 12th after an 8:24.527 in the petite final, which improved upon their 8:25.283 during the heats. The women's second varsity eight came in 11th, putting together a 7:42.439 in the petitle final that was 10 seconds better than their 7:52.647 heat time.

Tufts' men's varsity eight placed 14th of 16. They had a 6:37.943 time in the third final after a 6:40.457 heat time.
