Volleyball Notches Second Win of MIT Invitational with 3-0 Win Over Husson

Box Score
Mary Maccabee led the Jumbos offense with eight kills Friday night.

MEDFORD – After a tough 3-2 win over Babson earlier in the day, the Tufts volleyball team came out on fire against Husson Friday night, cruising to a 3-0 win.  The Jumbos are now 2-0 in MIT Invitational play, and will continue tournament play tomorrow with matches against DeSales and Springfield.

After the Jumbos and the Eagles split points to open the first set, the Jumbos scored nine consecutive points all behind the serve of junior Maddie Kuppe to earn the 10-1 advantage early.  Husson was able to close the lead slightly, getting as close as five points, but the Jumbos won the first set 25-10.

Things started similarly in the second set as the Jumbos jumped out to an early 7-0 lead with Kuppe serving.  The Eagles made it a close match, coming within one point in the middle of the set.  But, with seven kills from sophomore Mary Maccabee in the second set alone, the Jumbos played to a 25-14 win.

Once again in the third set the Jumbos gained an early lead, this time with 11 consecutive points coming while first-year Alex Garrett was serving.  Offensively in the third set, the Jumbos were led by rookie Gillian Wahleithner who had five kills in the set.

Maccabee led the Jumbos in the game with eight kills, while Wahleithner had five on the day.  Junior Carolina Berger and fellow classmate Esme Nulan had six digs apiece while junior Kyra Baum took care of the setting, turning in 25 assists.

For the Eagles, first-year Nia Arranaga had three kills to lead the offense.  Fellow classmate Sarah Wilson finished with ten digs.  The setting was done by rookie Kayla Hannon and junior Ryan Hood who finished with six and five assists, respectively.

Husson moves to 3-8 on the season and will be back in action tomorrow when they continue play in the MIT Invitational by taking on Emmanuel at 1:00 pm at MIT.  The Jumbos are now 3-3 with the two wins today.  Play continues for them in the MIT Invitational tomorrow as well as they challenge DeSales at 11:00 am and round out play with Springfield at 3:00 pm.  Both matches will be played at MIT.
