CAMBRIDGE – After edging DeSales, 3-2, in the earlier match of the day the Jumbos once again had their work cut out for them against local foe Springfield in their last match of the MIT Invitational. The Pride were able to edge the Jumbos, 3-2. Junior Maddie Kuppe was selected to the MIT Invitational All-Tournament team.
Despite taking the opening set, the Jumbos weren't able to edge the Pride, falling 15-25, 25-16, 25-23, 18-25, 15-10. Kuppe was the lone Jumbos selected to the All-Tournament team as she finished the weekend with 37 kills, 47 digs and 12 service aces.
Senior tri-captain once again led the Jumbo offense with 20 kills, while Kuppe had 13 kills and sophomore Elizabeth Ahrens had nine kills. First-year Katie Kim led the Jumbos with 27 digs, while Kuppe had 18 and Hopper had 16. Across the five sets junior Kyra Baum had 28 assists while sophomore Frances Brumley had 22 assists.
The Springfield offense was spread out as sophomore Jennifer Hurwitz had 14 kills, junior Kelsey McGayhey had 13 kills and rookie Hannah Andres had 12 kills. Senior Whitney Miller took the setting duties, as she had 42 assists.
The Pride, who were receiving votes in the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III National Poll and sat at the top of the New England Women's Volleyball Association New England Poll, are now 6-2 on the year. They will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Coast Guard.
The Jumbos move to 4-4 and will take the court again when they open up NESCAC play this coming weekend with a trip to Maine. They will battle Colby on Friday at 7:00 pm and Bowdoin on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
