WATERVILLE, Maine --- Down 19-13 in the third set, Tufts University rallied to take a 27-25 victory on the way to a 3-1 win against Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference volleyball Friday night.
Tufts moves to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in NESCAC play, while the Mules drop to 6-3 overall and 0-1 in the league. The Jumbos head to Bowdoin College for a 2 p.m. match Saturday. The Mules entertain Connecticut College at the same time. Conn College took a 3-0 win over Bowdoin on Friday night.
The Jumbos lost 25-19 in the first set before pulling out the next three in 25-17, 27-25, and 25-22.
Junior Maddie Kuppe led the Jumbos with a match-high 17 kills, while senior tri-captain Hayley Hopper finished with 10 kills and 13 defensive digs. Junior Kyra Baum dished 41 assists and had 10 digs, classmate Carolina Berger finished with 26 digs, and senior tri-captain Isabel Kuhel had six blocks and six kills.
First-year setter Emily Moslener led Colby with 36 assists, 15 digs, and four service aces. Kim Donaldson was strong at the net with a team-high 14 kills and a pair of blocks. Karolina Serhan added 11 kills and six blocks, Sarah Arvidson totaled eight kills and 12 digs, Natalie Roy had 17 digs, and Alexa Busser had five kills and two blocks.
After the two teams traded the opening two sets, Colby opened up a 19-13 margin in the third set. However, Tufts won an amazing point with many digs, blocks, and plenty of diving action to make it 19-14. The point sparked the Jumbos and they battled to tie the game at 20-20. With the game knotted at 25-25, Kuppe had a kill for 26-25 and Tufts closed out the set on a play where Colby's Elizabeth Noyes was hurt and did not return for the fourth set.
Colby got off to a terrific start in the fourth set and led 4-0 after a Roy winner. Tufts, though, rallied to take the lead at 7-6 and then pulled away for a 10-7 margin. The Mules got within two points on seven occasions the rest of the way, but Tufts held on for the 25-22 set win.
