NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Tufts volleyball team had their work cutout for them, but they pulled out a five set win over NESCAC rival Connecticut College Saturday afternoon to move to 3-1 in conference play and 8-5 overall. Tufts dropped the first set, won the second and third sets, and lost the fourth set to force the fifth set.
The 21-25, 26-24, 26-28, 25-12, 15-12, win featured a match-high 16 kills from senior tri-captain Isabel Kuhel. Kuhel hit for an impressive .464 kill percentage in the five set match. Junior Maddie Kuppe had 14 kills of her own to help the Jumbos offense and also came through with 29 digs. Junior Caroina Berger contributed 31 digs to the cause, while fellow classmate Kyra Baum took care of the setting and finished with 43 assists.
For the Camels, sophomore Alex McDevitt had 13 kills and 14 digs, junior Caroline Martin contributed 10 kills and 26 digs and sophomore Ella Johnson had 10 kills. Fellow classmate Emily Arterbury finished with 21 assists while rookie Katia Ellisman had 19 of her own.
Following the win over the Camels, the Jumbos immediately took on Framingham State. Connecticut College had a game break before taking on the Rams. With the loss to the Jumbos the Camels are now 4-7 with a 1-2 NESCAC mark. The Jumbos move to 6-5 overall with a record of 2-1 in NESCAC play.
After the day's play the Jumbos will be back in action when they travel to take on UMass Boston on Tuesday night. The Beacons, who are currently at the top of the New England Women's Volleyball Association regional poll, and the Jumbos will start at 7:00 pm.
