COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Tufts volleyball team opened up their 2014 season on Friday afternoon against St. Mary's of Minnesota at the Colorado College Classic. The Cardinals proved to be too much for the Jumbos, as St. Mary's topped Tufts, 3-0.
Tufts (0-1) joins St. Mary's (5-1), East Texas Baptist, Clarkson and host Colorado College in the two day tournament. St. Mary's took on East Texas Baptist before their match against the Jumbos and were able to beat the Tigers, 3-2. Tufts will now wait a game and play Clarkson at 7:00 pm to round out opening day play.
The Jumbos were down early and weren't able to find a stride, losing in three sets, 25-16, 25-17, 25-19.
Senior Hayley Hopper led the Jumbos with 11 kills and six digs while first-year Alex Garrett had 15 digs of her own. Seniors Jessica Ingrum and Isabel Kuhel turned in six and four digs of their own, respectively.
Sophomore Francis Brumley and junior Kyra Baum split the setting duties, with Brumley finishing with 15 assists while Baum had eight of her own.
On the Cardinals end, Alex Peterson collected 11 kills while Lex Krogstad came through with 10 digs.
The Jumbos will be back in action tonight when they take on #17 Clarkson. On Saturday they square off with East Texas Baptist at 6:00 pm and #7 Colorado College at 8:00 pm.
