CAMBRIDGE – The Tufts women's squash team picked up it's first win of the season on Friday afternoon as they topped local-rival Boston College, 8-1, at Harvard. The match was the second of the day for the Jumbos, who fell to the University of Virginia earlier in the day.
The Jumbos are now 1-1 on the season, and will face off with Boston University on Saturday and then NESCAC-rival Hamilton on Sunday to wrap up a busy opening weekend.
Seven of the Jumbo's eight wins came in just three games. Senior captain Paget Stanco took the courts in the first position, and topped Sara Rimmler, 11-4, 11-8, 11-1 for the win. In the number two position rookie Zarena Jaffry picked up her first collegiate win by topping Caroline Whelan, 11-8, 11-7, 11-6. Classmate Hannah Burns allowed her Eagle counterpart just 13 points across three games as she won in the third position.
In the fourth position freshman Olivia Ladd-Luthingshauser picked up a three game win over Grace Tregidgo, 11-3, 11-8, 11-3. Sophomore Lauren Banner faced off with Caroline Kulig in the fifth position, and won easily in three games, 11-1, 11-9, 11-3. Freshman Chista Irani picked up a three game win over Katherine Neuberger in the sixth position. Classmate Isabella Libassi also won in three games in the eighth position.
Rookie Sinclair Meggitt played one of the toughest matches of the day in the seventh position, picking up a five game win over Nelsmarie Matos, 13-11, 11-5, 7-11, 8-11, 11-2. The lone loss for the Jumbos came in the ninth position, but it took the Eagles' Page Hanauer five games to top Jumbo Lily Hayes, 11-8, 7-11, 6-11, 11-5, 11-3.
The Jumbos will be back in action on Saturday when they host Boston University at Belmont Hill School and then Hamilton on Sunday at Harvard.
