Men's Swimming & Diving Wins Eight Races in Wesleyan Tri-Meet

Anthony DeBenedetto's 200 fly win was one of eight by the Jumbos

MIDDLETOWN, CT - The Tufts Men's Swimming & Diving team finished its fall semester of action by winning eight events in a tri-meet at Wesleyan University with WPI Friday night. Senior tri-captain Michael Winget, freshman Kingsley Bowen, and freshman Brandon Jinn all won twice.

Bowen swam Tufts' fastest 50 freestyle time of the season with a 21.84 to win that event. He was victorious by 0.01 over WPI's Nolan Hughes (21.85). Earlier in the meet, Bowen had posted a time of 23.36 seconds to win the 50 butterfly. He also had a second-place time of 51.71 seconds in the 100 backstroke.

The Jumbos won the first five events, including Jinn in the 500 freestyle (4:45.07) and Winget in the 50 backstroke (23.58) with his season-best time. Sophomore Jumbo Morgan Ciliv won the 50 breaststroke in 27.35 seconds to start the meet.

Jinn added a 1:45.65 victory in the 200 freestyle later on, as he also edged WPI's Hughes (1:45.73) by 0.08. Winget won his second race of the night in the 200 backstroke touching in 1:52.72. The last Tufts victory came in the 200 fly where senior Anthony DeBenedetto won in 1:56.56.

Tufts swept the meet with a close 160-155 win over WPI and a 224-93 victory against the host Cardinals.

Eight runner-up finishes in all added to the Jumbo score. Ciliv was second in the 100 breaststroke at 1:00.06 and junior Jon Arbaugh took second in the 200 breast (2:12.20). Winget touched second in the 400 individual medley (4:10.07).

Senior tri-captain Cam Simko and sophomores Zachary Wallace and Aaron Idelson all earned seconds and thirds. Simko was second behind Jinn in the 500 free with a 4:48.93 time and swam third in the 100 fly (53.22). Wallace was the runner-up to Bowen in the 50 fly with a 24.25 mark of his own while taking third in the 400 IM (4:14.91). Idelson totaled 242.60 points for runner-up honors in the three-meter event and finished at 224.94 for third in one-meter.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Winget, Wallace, Bowen and sophomore Lorenzo Lau put together a 1:27.12 time for second place.

The Jumbos are off until resuming their 2015-16 schedule at Boston College on January 14.
