Five Jumbos Hit NCAA Swimming & Diving Marks on Second Day of MIT Invitational

Aaron Idelson won the one-meter diving event at MIT

CAMBRIDGE - Jumbos Kingsley Bowen, Anthony DeBenedetto, Aaron Idelson, Zachary Wallace, and Michael Winget all recorded NCAA marks for the Tufts Men's Swimming & Diving team on the second day of the MIT Invitational on Saturday.

Winget and Bowen did so in the 100 backstroke. Winget swam a 49.80 in the preliminaries on Saturday morning, a full second below the 50.88 NCAA B cut for the event. He went 50.28 in the final. Bowen's 50.43 seconds time in the final also made the qualifying mark. He had finished in 50.45 for the prelims. Winget was fourth and Bowen was fifth among a competitive field at MIT.

Idelson placed first out of 10 in the one-meter diving competition on Saturday. His 446.55 score was over the 425 NCAA qualifier. On Friday Idelson had just missed the NCAA requirement score in three-meter.

DeBenedetto and Wallace also had their NCAA marks in the preliminaries. DeBenedetto's 1:52.73 in the 200 butterfly on Saturday morning was within the 1:53.87 NCAA standard. He swam 1:53.91 in the final for ninth. Wallace's 4:05.94 in the 400 individual medley prelims was nearly two seconds below the 4:07.40 B cut. He swam 4:09.57 for 10th in the final.

Tufts is third out of six teams at MIT overall with Sunday racing still to come. They have compiled a score of 488 thus far. The host Engineers lead the invitational with a 929.5 score and NYU is second at 706. SUNY New Paltz, Wheaton and Keene State are also there.

Other Saturday performances included senior tri-captain Cam Simko's 1:43.70 for eighth in the 200 freestyle, junior Jon Arbaugh with a 59.08 for 10th in the 100 breaststroke, and a 22.23 in the 50 freestyle by sophomore Michael Brienza for 20th place.

The 200 freestyle relay group of Brienza, Winget, Wallace and Bowen timed 1:25.70 for seventh place. The 400 medley relay foursome of Winget, sophomore Morgan Ciliv, Wallace and Bowen touched in 3:27.19 for eighth place.
