Paget Stanco won for the Jumbos against Connecticut College Saturday |
CAMBRIDGE – The Tufts women's squash team won its second match of the College Squash Association's (CSA) Team Championships on Saturday afternoon, downing Connecticut College for the third time this month. The Jumbos will move on to play William Smith in the finals of the Epps Cup on Sunday at 5:00 pm.
Harvard University, the host of the CSA Team Championships, is closed Sunday until 2:30 pm because of Winter Storm Neptune, but expects to be open and running in time for a 5:00 pm match between the Jumbos and the Herons.
The Jumbos topped the Camel's, 8-1, in the semifinals of the Epps Cup, winning in the first through eighth positions. Junior tri-captain Paget Stanco allowed her Camel a mere 13 points across three games in the first position, winning 11-5, 11-8, 11-0. Senior tri-captain Paige Dahlman took the courts in the second position, and was able to earn a three game win over the Camel's Leah Puklin (11-7, 13-11, 11-2).
In the third position, rookie Claudia Udolf played a little closer of a match as she lost in extra points in the first game, but came back to win in four games over Mawa Ballo (12-14, 13-11, 11-5, 11-9). Senior tri-captain Ann Bellinger also played a four game match against Adrienne Sieverding in the fourth position, winning 13-11, 6-11, 11-4, 11-1.
Rookie Lauren Banner only needed three games in the fifth position, besting Nina Nalle 12-10, 11-6, 11-4. Playing in the sixth position, sophomore Anna Bezahler also played a three game match with Allie Fuller, downing the Camel 11-7, 11-3, 11-6. Sophomore Lynn Cheng let her Camel opponent win the second game in the seventh position, but was able to win in four games for the Jumbos (11-6, 9-11, 12-10, 11-8). The last Jumbo win came in the eighth position from first-year Gabi Salomon, who topped Myra Jacobs (11-2, 11-9, 12-10).
Playing in the ninth position, first-year Nellie Harvey lost a battle with Victoria Allen, falling in four games (12-10, 11-9, 8-11, 11-6).
The Jumbos will now turn their attention to the Herons, a team they faced off with earlier this year and lost to, 6-3. But, that was in November and during their first weekend of play when they did not have Stanco in the lineup. Hopefully with the return of their #1, the Jumbos will be able to edge the Herons to win the Epps Cup.
