CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Tufts men's tennis team opened their spring 2015 campaign with a win, taking on Denison in Claremont, California in their first match of the spring semester. The Jumbos won in all three doubles positions, in addition to winning in five of the six singles positions.
Junior Nik Telkedzhiev and senior co-captain Brian Tan took the courts in the first doubles position, and were able to edge the Denison pair of Grant Veltman and Casey Cempre, 9-8. In the second doubles position Benjamin Battle and Nick Cary topped Jackson O'GormanBean and Jeffrey LoDuca, 8-5. Sweeping doubles play, the Jumbos also received a win from the pair of junior co-captain Rob Jacobson and freshman Rohan Gupte in the third doubles slot, as the Jumbos won over Denison's Owen Smith and Grant MacPherson, 8-4.
Tufts showed no let up in singles play. Telkedzhiev won in two in the first singles position over Veltman, 6-3, 7-6. Battle took on Cempre in the second singles position, and cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win. Jacobson had to work a little harder in the third spot, as his match went to three sets, but he was bale to top O'GormanBean 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
Cary faced off with Jack O'Koniewski in the fourth singles spot, and was able to win in two sets, 6-2, 7-5. The last Jumbo win came from Gupte in the sixth singles spot, as he battled with Smith but was able to win in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 10-7.
In the fifth position, freshman Griffin Brockman faced off with DoLuca, but fell in three sets and extra points to his Big Red counterpart, 7-5, 4-6, 7-10.
The Jumbos (1-0) will be back in action on Wednesday when they take on Pomona-Pitzer at 1:00 pm. Denison (2-6) returns to the courts on Tuesday when they face off with Sewanee.
