Men's Lacrosse Handles Stevenson 18-12 in Battle Between # 1 and #3

OWINGS MILLS, MD - Junior John Uppgren scored five goals with two assists as the #1 ranked Tufts men's lacrosse team never trailed in an 18-12 victory at #3 Stevenson on Tuesday night.

Junior Kyle Howard-Johnson had two goals and three assists

The Jumbos scored six unanswered goals in the second quarter to lead 9-3 at halftime and never looked back. Tufts by led by nine goals three times in the fourth quarter until the Mustangs finished with three straight.

Sophomore Zach Richman added four goals for the Jumbos (5-0). Junior Kyle Howard-Johnson tallied two goals with three assists and classmate Ben Andreycak added two goals and two assists. Junior Alex Salazar totaled 19 saves.

Colin Dabney led the hosts (3-2) with three goals and an assist. Stephen Banick finished with two goals and an assist. Jonathan Thelen and Matt Tompkins both had two goals. Ben Richards started in goal and made nine saves.

Tufts led 2-1 after one as Peter Gill and Jake Gillespie scored nine seconds part in the middle of the period. Dabney had the Mustang goal.

Goals by Thelen and Tompkins tied it for Stevenson at 3-3 with 9:12 to play until halftime. Tufts closed the half with six goals, two each by Uppgren and Richman starting the stretch. They scored three times in the final minute including Howard-Johnson's goal with 10 seconds left for a 9-3 halftime lead.

Tyler Morgan scored the first goal of the second half 30 seconds in for Stevenson making it  9-4. However, Tufts netted three of the next four and were up 12-5 after Andreycak assisted Howard-Johnson at 2:50 of the third.  The Mustangs scored the last goal of the third and first of the fourth, but 12-7 is the closest they would be for the rest of the contest.

Tufts had four in a row and five of the next six for a 17-8 margin with 7:22 remaining in regulation. Richman had a pair during the spurt. Dabney and Banick had a goal and an assist each in the final seven minutes for Stevenson.

Twenty penalties were whistled in the contest with eight extra-man goals scored. Stevenson went five for seven and Tufts was three for nine. Junior Conor Helfrich was a catalyst for the Jumbos again with 16 face-off wins. The Jumbos won the groundball battle 51-30 though Stevenson had a 48-45 edge in shots.

Senior co-captain Garrett Read caused two turnovers and came up with four groundballs for the Jumbos. Junior Chris Sawyer caused two turnovers and collected three groundballs. Gillespie added five groundballs.

Lito Flanagan and Josh Rufolo caused two turnovers on the Stevenson side. Justin Buonomo won 13 face-offs and Callum Robinson had four groundballs.
