CLAREMONT, Calif. – In their first contest of the spring season the Tufts women's tennis team played a match as close as they get as they were just able to edge Denison, 5-4, in Claremont, California. The Jumbos won all three doubles matches, and two of their six singles matches to secure the win.
After working very hard on their doubles play over the off-season, the Jumbos came out on fire and won in all three doubles positions. In the first doubles spot the pair of sophomore Conner Calabro and first-year Lauren Louks beat Courtney Brown and Taylor Hawkins, 8-4. In the second position, sophomore Alexa Meltzer and rookie Zoe Miller were able to deal Denison's Meg Chiumento and Rochell Issa an 8-3 loss. The last Jumbo win was a convincing one in the third position, as sophomores Chelsea Hayashi and Jacqueline Baum posted an 8-1 win over Emily Holloway and Heather Abzug.
In singles play, the Big Red were able to stage a small comeback. Wins from Meltzer and Baum secured a win for the Jumbos. Meltzer took the courts in the second singles position, and was able to post a 6-4, 6-3 win over Brown. Baum faced off with Carol Vitellas in the sixth singles spot, and was able to earn a 6-2, 6-3 win over her Big Red counterpart.
In the first position, Denison's Hawkins and Calabro played a tough match, but Calabro lost in two sets, 7-5, 7-5. In the third spot, Louks took on Chiumento, but wasn't able to top the Big Red player, falling in two sets, 7-6, 6-2. Hayashi took on the Big Red's Rochell Issa in the fourth position, but wasn't able to earn the win, falling in two sets, 6-3, 6-4. The last Big Red Win came in the fifth position, as Holloway topped Miller in two sets, 6-3, 6-4.
The Jumbos (1-0) will be back in action on Thursday as they take on La Verne at the Claremont Club. Denison (3-2) will also take the courts again on Thursday as they face off with Salisbury.
