Alexa Meltzer played a hard fought match in the second singles spot for the Jumbos |
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The #17 Tufts women's tennis team faced off with fifth ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on their spring break trip, but fell to the Athena's 9-0. The match was the third of the break for the Jumbos, who had won both of their first two matches of the season.
In doubles play, the Jumbos played two close matches, in the first and third positions. Sophomore Conner Calabro and first-year Lauren Louks took on the Athena pair of Caroline Ward and Katie Kuosman in the first doubles spot, but fell 8-4. In the third doubles spot, sophomores Chelsea Hayashi and Jacquline Baum fell to Lindsay Brown and Bria Smith, 9-7.
In the second doubles spot, sophomore Alexa Meltzer and rookie Zoe Miller were bested by Sarah Kukino and Kyla Scott. The 3-0 advantage was too much for the Jumbos, as they weren't able to gain much momentum in singles play.
Taking the courts in the first singles spot, Calabro faced off with Ward but fell in two sets, 6-3, 6-3. Meltzer played a hard fought match in the second singles spot, but was topped by Katie Kuosman in three sets, 3-6, 6-2 (10-4). Playing third singles for the Jumbos, Louks faced off with Kukino but was bested in two sets, 6-4, 6-1.
In the fourth singles spot Hayashi faced off with Brown, but fell in two sets 6-0, 6-1. The score was similar in the fifth spot, as Baum was topped by Scott, 6-2, 6-1. Rounding out the Jumbos singles lineup was Miller, who faced off with Smith in the sixth singles spot, but Miller fell to her Athena counterpart, 6-1, 7-6 (2)
The Jumbos move to 2-1 on the season with the loss, and will take the courts again on Saturday when they take on University of Redlands. CMS is now 11-1 and will next face off with Middlebury on Saturday.
