MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Tufts men's tennis team took on second ranked Emory on Saturday morning at Middlebury College. The #30 ranked Jumbos were down 2-1 after doubles play, and weren't able to pull off a comeback, getting edged by the Eagles, 5-4.
With the win Emory moves to 12-4 on the season. The Jumbos are now 3-6 overall this season with an 0-3 conference mark.
The lone win in doubles play for the Jumbos came at No. 1 doubles as junior Nik Telkedzhiev and rookie Rohan Gupte took on the Eagle duo of Alex Ruderman and Ian Wagner, and pulled out an 8-5 win.
Sophomore Benjamin Battle and junior Nick Cary took the courts at No. 2 doubles but weren't able to top the Eagle pair of Eric Halpern and Aman Manji. The second Jumbo setback in doubles play came at No. 3 doubles as freshman Zain Ali and senior co-captain Brian Tan fell to Rafe Mosetick and David Omsky.
In singles play the Jumbos were able to pick up wins at the No. 4 through No. 6 singles positions. But it wasn't enough, as the Eagles won three matches to secure the 5-4 win.
At No. 4 singles Ali picked up a two set win over Ian Wagner, 6-3, 6-2. Junior Jay Glickman needed three sets at No. 5 singles, but he was able to top Josh Goodman, 6-3, 1-6, 10-5. The last Jumbo win came at No. 6 singles from rookie Garrett Weinstein who topped Manji in two sets, 6-4. 6-2.
Telkedzhiev, Gupte and junior co-captain Rob Jacobson took the courts at the first through third singles positions, respectively, but all fell in two sets to their Eagle opponents.
The Jumbos will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Colby for a 4:00 pm start time.
